Renewal Requirements for ABC Certificates
[Note: If you obtain a certificate from your state, province, or any organization other than ABC, you will need to follow the certifying authority's procedures and requirements for renewing that certificate. The following information applies only to renewing a certificate issued directly from the Association of Boards of Certification.]
Certified operators/analysts must comply with ABC's renewal process to maintain their ABC certification. ABC certificates are valid for two years. Approximately three months prior to the expiration date of your certificate you will be sent a renewal application form and instructions on how to renew your certificate. Individuals who have not filed a renewal application within six months after the certificate expiration date will be removed from ABC's listing of ABC-certified operators/analysts.
The individual operator/analyst is responsible for keeping ABC informed of any change in address, and for contacting the ABC office if the renewal application materials are not received before the expiration date of the certificate.
Renewal of your ABC certificate requires the following:
- Renewal fee. For certificates which expire through September 2008, a fee of USD $95.00 must be submitted with your renewal application. The renewal fee will increase to USD $110.00 effective October 1, 2008. Certificates which expire in October 2008 or later will be assessed the new renewal fee. An additional late fee of USD $35.00 will be assessed if your certificate is not renewed within six months after its expiration date. Certificates cannot be renewed if they have been expired for more than two years.
- Documentation of 2.4 CEUs of professional growth. A total of 2.4 CEUs (24 contact hours) of professional growth must be completed during the two year term of your certificate. Courses need to be taken in approved topic areas for your area of certification (see links to approved topic listings below, including a listing of topics not approved for renewal in any category). Documentation must be in the form of a certificate or letter issued by the course provider which states the title of the course, the number of contact hours or CEUs awarded for completing the course, date of course completion, and signature of instructor or organization.
Please note the following when submitting courses for renewal:
- Credit will not be given for teaching courses.
- Credit for workshops will only be given if CEUs or contact hours are officially issued by the workshop organizer.
- A course taken more than one time during the two year term of a certificate will only be given credit once. This includes courses that are offered on an annual basis.
