ABC's Testing Service

ABC's Testing Service was developed in 1982 to assist states and provinces in the development of certification exams. Only Regulatory Program Members and Voluntary Program Members (where applicable) of ABC are eligible to use the Testing Service. By demonstrating our commitment to member satisfaction and affordable testing, we now have over sixty clients and offer several certification examination options to our members.

Each certification program has the authority to determine the content of its own exams. Not all programs use the ABC Testing Service, and not all Testing Service Clients use ABC standardized exams.

  • Please contact the certifying authority for your state, province, or geopolitical region for information provided to examinees regarding that program's exams.

  • Contact the ABC Certification Program if you would like more information about being certified by ABC.

ABC currently has standardized exams available in the following categories:

  • Water Treatment Operator, Class I-IV
  • Distribution System Operator, Class I-IV
  • Very Small Water System Operator

Questions go through an extensive validation process before being used on a standardized exam. ABC's validation procedure is described in:

All ABC standardized exams are closed book. No reference material, programmable calculators, computers, or cameras are allowed in the examination site. Candidates should only bring photo identification, a non-programmable calculator, two sharpened soft-lead (#2 or HB) pencils and an eraser to the examination site. Any other material must be left outside the examination site. All notes must be written in the exam book. Candidates are not allowed to take any written material from the examination site. Candidates who violate these rules may be asked to leave the site and may be disqualified from the exam.

Operator certification exams are administered by our Testing Service Clients using either paper tests or computer-based tests. Test results are provided to individual examinees only by the member certifying authority responsible for issuing certificates.
